TAX BREAK
Dr. Walker, VOICE health committee member, has some advice for
parents of hearing impaired children. Below is a letter for physicians
that parents can download to take when they visit the doctor.
For Parents...
It’s tax time and you may be asked to complete a disability tax
credit for your hearing impaired child if requested by Revenue Canada.
This requires that you take the form to your physician and have them
verify that your child qualifies.
The new criteria should allow for greater and easier inclusion;
however, if you have difficulty, it is important to point out to your
healthcare provider that your child has a prolonged physical impairment
that severely affects their ability to function. The changes most
recently have taken into account the fact that it may take an inordinate
amount of time to hear (significantly longer than for an average person
who does not have the impairment). Also, despite the fact that your
child may have an assistive device, many children still rely on their
ability to lip read in order to appreciate speech and language.
